Sydney Mieko King
Sydney Mieko King (b. San Francisco, CA) is an artist working in photography, sculpture, and video. She seeks new ways of imaging the body and its trace, engaging in continued material exploration through her process. Her practice stems from an interest in excavating and modifying the fundamental aspects of photography–the photosensitive surface, the aperture, and the enclosed space of the camera. King builds cameras out of bedrooms and foamcore boxes, fabricates lenses from molds of her body, and casts paper screens for video projection.
King’s work has been shown at the International Center for Photography Museum, Huxley-Parlour Gallery, François Ghebaly Gallery, the Lewis Center for the Arts, and others. She has been an artist fellow at Yaddo, Visual Studies Workshop, the Schneider Museum of Art, BRIC, Recess, VCCA, and the Yale Norfolk School of Art. She is the recipient of a 2021 En Foco Fellowship and 2021 Aperture x Google Creator Labs Photo Fund Award. Her work has been featured in The Cut, Vogue Magazine, Splash & Grab Photography Magazine, Nueva Luz Magazine, and NR Magazine.
King received her MFA in Photography from the Yale School of Art in 2023, following a degree in Art & Archaeology from Princeton University in 2017. She currently lives and works in New Haven.
