Shane Darwent
Shane Darwent’s practice weaves together sculptural and photo-based processes to reconsider the commonplace within the built American landscape. Honing in on commercial roadside spaces, his work explores the transformation of strip mall facades, the spatial layout of parking lots, and the ubiquity of gas station landscapes to meditate on the political systems and socio-economic conditions which give shape to our constructed environments. During his Bemis residency, Darwent will begin a new series of sculptures based on and inspired by storefront awnings and their ability to function as harbingers of an economic landscape in flux. Additionally, Darwent will continue an ongoing series of photo-based works that alter and reimagine his photographs of struggling shopping centers and wayside commercial spaces through playful, painted interventions.
