Description
Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts seeks a Communications + Engagement Intern to support the organization’s marketing, communications, and visitor experience initiatives. Working closely with the Communications Director and Community Experience + Engagement Manager, the intern will gain hands-on experience in nonprofit arts communications while contributing to the promotion of exhibitions, public programs, and performances, including the experimental music series at LOW END.
This internship offers the opportunity to learn how a contemporary arts organization connects with audiences through storytelling, marketing, and community engagement. As part of the summer internship cohort across all departments, the intern will also be invited to participate in professional development opportunities such as artist studio visits, skill-building demonstrations, and visits to other local arts organizations.
Responsibilities
Assist with social media content development
Support marketing initiatives such as community poster and flyer distribution
Assist with research projects related to media outreach, audience engagement, and peer arts organizations
Help organize and update communications resources—both printed and digital—such as media lists, image archives, and departmental files
Assist with visitor-facing communications, including answering phones, responding to general inquiries, and greeting guests at the front desk
Support the preparation of marketing materials and on-site visitor resources such as signage
Provide general administrative support for the Communications Department
Other duties as assigned
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in a college degree program or a recent college graduate (within six months) studying marketing, communications, public relations, arts administration, or a related field
- Demonstrated interest in nonprofit organizations and/or contemporary arts
- Interest in learning about media relations, audience development, and digital communications
- A successful criminal background check
Skills
- Self-motivation, attention to detail, and strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively in a small team environment; friendly and professional demeanor when interacting with visitors and colleagues
- Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) is helpful but not required

Compensation
This is an unpaid internship designed as an educational and experiential learning opportunity. Academic credit may be available, depending on the intern’s institution and program requirements.
