Doug Johnston's work oscillates between art and design, primarily focused on a process of coiling and machine-stitching cordage influenced by 3D printing and ancient vessel-building techniques, which he has been using since 2010. His practice engages architecture, spatial and landscape formation, commerce, and fundamental human technologies. Each piece is a drawing, a body, a space, and an attempt to grasp geologic time as we enter the Anthropocene. While at Bemis Center he plans to continue developing large sculptural works of coiled-and-stitched rope, including wall-hanging pieces and vessel forms.
