Jon Rappleye

Jersey City, NJ
November 5, 2008 - January 31, 2009

Rappleye's drawings, sculptures and installation arrays introduce a personal mythology through a fanciful, folklore-laden environment - one teeming with an abundance of otherworldly flora and fauna. His residency at the Bemis Center will be dedicated to a concentrated focus on a body of work that he calls Homespun Fairytales where anthropomorphic creatures dwell in fantastical forests and the boundaries between the real and the imagined are blurred in visions that are as familiar and comforting as they are incongruous and oddly unsettling.

The artist, whose work has been featured in Artforum, ArtTimes and New American Paintings to name but a few, studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan, Maine after receiving a BFA from Utah State University and an MFA from the University of Wisconsin - Madison.

He is represented by the Jeff Bailey Gallery in New York and the Richard Heller Gallery in Los Angeles.

Jon Rappleye is the receipient of the Golden Fellowship in recognition of exceptional talent in the field of painting.
