Stephanie Dotson

Bloomington, IN
May 1 - July 28, 2006

Stephanie Dotson records her reaction to the world around her by creating a database of drawing and patterns, which, when manipulated and collaged through printmaking, expose the decorative as passive, as a "blank" canvas whereupon a more personal network of images develops it's new patois. She crosses traditional materials and techniques with digital media to create intricate collages that explore and combine gallery installation, illustrative drawings and decorative patterning. Says Dotson: "I want to create something loaded with pre-existing images carry the language of beauty and comfort, wallpaper design and ornamental patterning. I claim these images and patterns as my own by integrating my personal imagery into its own design." The artist received her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and her MFA from the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia in Athens. Dotson spent the past year as visiting assistant professor of printmaking at Indiana University, and she has exhibited her work widely in both solo and group exhibitions including a forthcoming solo exhibition at the Three Walls space in Chicago, IL.
