Christopher Romer

London, England
May 1 – July 29, 2005

Christopher Romer grew up in England and first came to the United States as an adult and working sculptor. He focuses on wood as his primary raw material, using it to create torsos reminiscent of classical antiquity and columns where tree rings are reflective of the whorls found in tidal pools. He frequently applies paint to his sculptures and then carves or shaves it away to reveal the underlying nature of the wood grain. He received his BA in Painting from the Chelsea School of Art in London, and an MFA in Sculpture from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The artist is the recipient of numerous grants, including a Fulbright Grant to Germany in 1990. He was also an Artist-in-Residence at the Bemis Center in both 1995 and 1998. Romer currently works in the Sculpture Department of New York University, and his work is included in the collections of Northwestern University and the Delfina Studio Trust, among others.
