Imagery and Imagination:
The Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts
Announces the Final Lecture in its Nebraska Now Gallery Talk Series

As the exhibition Nebraska Now: 2004 Nebraska Arts Council Fellowship Recipients heads into its final weeks, the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts announces the final lecture in its special Gallery Talk series by Nebraska’s finest artists. The Nebraska Arts Council awarded fellowships to twelve artists, all chosen based solely on the excellence of their work. This last Gallery Talk takes place Saturday, February 12, 2005, at 12:00 noon, when artists Santiago Cal and Bill Shaffer discuss the intriguing images that comprise their art. This event is free, and the public is warmly invited to attend.
Bill Shaffer received his M.F.A. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and he has exhibited his work locally and nationally through solo and group exhibitions. Teaching painting and drawing at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, Shaffer’s work explores emptiness in landscape, particularly defined by motels, pools, and other images, which often suggest the theme of vacation in a minimalist vein. “It is imagery that sees a beauty in isolation, rather than desperation or loneliness,” reflects Shaffer about his work.
Born in San Ignacio, Belize, Santiago Cal received his M.F.A. from Virginia Commonwealth University. Currently a member of the faculty at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, Cal has exhibited in Spain, Mexico, Guatemala and Taiwan. He has been an artist in residence at the Gruber-Jez Foundation in Cholul, Mexico and at the Poustinia Land Art Park in Belize. Cal’s sculptural pieces, in his words, are inspired by “chance encounters, dreams and ideas rooted in literature.” The artist is interested in working with the human image and its implications, and he accomplishes this by using symbolism.

Over the past two months, the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts has showcased Nebraska’s most talented artists. Join us on Saturday, February 12, at 12:00 noon for this final opportunity to attend our Nebraska Now Lecture Series and to learn more about Nebraska artists Santiago Cal and Bill Shaffer as they discuss their fascinating work.
