Development Assistant

Bemis Center is seeking a Development Assistant to help to advance the organization’s mission.

The Development Assistant will work directly with the Development Director, Foundation and Corporate Giving Associate, and Executive Director to help achieve immediate and long-term fundraising goals and provide administrative support. Reporting to the Development Director, daily duties will include meeting coordination, maintaining donor database records, and drafting gift acknowledgments. The Development Assistant will also support all aspects of special event planning including two annual large-scale fundraisers and smaller cultivation events. This is an opportunity to join an energetic and collegial staff at one of Omaha’s most unique arts organizations.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Gift Processing and Data Management – processing income in Bemis Center’s eTapestry database, providing regular and accurate recordings of funder data, creating reports and mailing lists
  • Correspondence and Acknowledgements – drafting of timely gift acknowledgment letters to individual funders and other funder correspondence as required
  • Event Management – assisting in the planning and coordination of large-scale fundraisers and smaller cultivation events
  • Committee Administration – maintaining the schedule of Board, Executive, and committee meetings and coordination of agendas
  • Meeting Coordination – scheduling meetings with locally, nationally, and internationally-based donors and preparing meeting materials
  • Donor Stewardship – assisting in the development of engagement strategies and outreach to funders and prospects, having regular interface with Bemis Board Members and other funders
  • General Administrative Support – provide general administrative support for the Development Department and Executive Director, including assisting with the preparation of reports and other communications and maintaining files and records


  • 1–3 years experience as a development/administrative professional, preferably in the context of a small-to-medium-size arts organization or other nonprofit organization
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills and the ability to build and maintain relationships with stakeholders at all levels of the organization, including Board Members, strategic partners, and the public
  • Excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and database experience preferred
  • Ability to act with excellent judgment and diplomacy and maintain a high level of confidentiality
  • Strong organizational skills and impeccable attention to detail
  • Creative and strategic thinker with the capacity to take initiative and to work independently and as a team player in a fun, yet demanding arts organization
  • Ability to assist with special events outside of regular business hours on occasion
  • Understand and promote Bemis Center’s mission in a clear, spirited manner
  • Successful reference check
