Leah Bailis

Philadelphia, PA
June 1 - August 29, 2006
Sculpture

The forms that Leah Bailis works with come from photographs of actual houses in her immediate surroundings, and they function as specific manifestations of the idea of the typical American home. Says the artist: "The house interests me for its strength as a formal image - an exterior form that describes a space contained inside - and for its psychological function. The house can be understood as the self. I work from photographs of actual houses, varying the shape of the space and the sense of containment. I want my models to mirror the beauty, the sense of melancholy, and the tension that I find in the originals." The artist earned her undergraduate degree at Bard College and studied at the Lacoste School of the Arts in France before receiving her MFA from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She has received a number of awards, including the Vermont Studio Center Fellowship, and she has exhibited her work in both solo and group exhibitions.
