"beginning.break.rapid" Poetry Workshop

Location: Bemis Center | 724 S 12th Street
Description: Join Todd Robinson for a poetry workshop inspired by beginning.break.rapid: Kenji Fujita & Barbara Takenaga, on view at Bemis Center through June 2, 2018. Explore the exhibition and several creative writing forms with writers of all ages and skill levels. Free and open to the public. Some paper and writing utensils will be available, attendees are welcome to bring their own materials.

"Zen pretty much comes down to three things—” poet Jane Hirshfield writes: “everything changes; everything is connected; pay attention.”

The beginning.break.rapid Poetry Workshop will guide participants through a series of writing exercises aimed to honor the mystery of process, which can be unreliable, structural, and epiphanic. Processes in the workshop will involve reading together, walking together, seeing together, and writing together. Specific forms of poetry will be discussed and practiced, such as the American Sentence, ekphrastic poetry, and Exquisite Corpse. Viewing art and words from all sides can result in unexpected revelations: “The capacity for astonishment is the poet’s greatest virtue.” – Osip Mandelstam

Todd Robinson teaches in the Writer's Workshop at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, is co-host of Kaneko's feedback reading series, and has conducted workshops with Omaha Creative Institute, Nebraska Writers Collective, Poets in the Schools, Black Squirrel Summer Arts Program, Seven Doctors Project, and Warrior Writers. His second book of poetry, Mass for Shut-Ins, will be published in August 2018 by Backwaters Press.
