The UNDERGROUND extends the Bemis Center's mission to support exceptional talent through programming which directly impacts the arts community of Omaha. Our galleries are dedicated to providing exhibition opportunities for emerging artists, many of whom are showing their work for the first time. The UNDERGROUND's exhibition program also supports local mid-career artists by providing a venue in which they can experiment with, and exhibit, new bodies of work -- without the restrictions of a commercial gallery setting. Our curatorial program actively encourages exceptional regional talent to grow and challenge not only themselves -- but every member of our community encountering their work at the Bemis Center.
The UNDERGROUND not only serves as a venue for artists to explore process and projects, but plays an active role in stimulating discussion and conceptualization of contemporary art. Each month, the space hosts several programs, including gallery talks, educational workshops and social events -- all aimed at making the arts more accessible and engaging to our community. Everything we do is focused on a simple, yet vital goal: we strive to help our artists become better at what they do, while strengthening the greater relationship that the city of Omaha has with the arts.
- Each year, over a dozen regional artists are provided with solo exhibition opportunities through the UNDERGROUND's curatorial program.
- In conjunction with our exhibitions, the UNDERGROUND helps to foster a connection between the artists and the community through dialogue during our Gallery Talk events.
