The Week Long Throng is the culminating exhibition for the Spring 2010 semester of the mentoring programs at The Kent Bellows Studio & Center for Visual Arts. An opening reception for the Bemis Underground event is scheduled for Friday, May 7th, from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.

The title for the show refers to the semester-long experience of each student and mentor participating in the Young Artist Mentoring Programs at The Kent Bellows Studio. Each student and mentor is asked to find their unique voice while being a contributing member of the crowd, or throng. Featuring 2-D, 3-D, installation and performance art, this exhibition serves as a week-long revelry showcasing the final stage of the powerful creative journey of student and mentor.

Curated by Cassandra Butt, Nicole Crawford, Noah Diaz, Taye Edwards, Rachele Johnson and Maggie Weber, The Week Long Throng showcases the work of 40 student artists and their mentors The exhibition will continue through Friday, May 14th with gallery hours of 11 am-5pm Tuesday-Saturday.

A Word from The Kent Bellows Studio and Center for Visual Arts:
Founded in 2007, The Kent Bellows Studio and Center for Visual Arts (http://www.joslyn.org/education/kent-bellows-mentoring-program/) strives to ignite the creative spark in individuals, encouraging them to reach their highest potential through self-expression in the visual arts. Our Mentoring programs for high school-age artists balance the freedom to create with the guidance of professional mentors to deliver hands-on art experiences that inspire both creative thinking and action.

It is our honor and privilege to live out Kent Bellows’ incredible legacy of artistic creativity and mentorship. Kent was an Omaha-based artist and is recognized as one of the greatest masters of American Realism. Beyond his artwork. Kent is admired and remembered for his dedication to mentoring other artists and drawing out their own individual creative power.

Artist Bios:
Jessica Bequette is in 11th grade at Millard North High School in Omaha. Jessica is exploring stencil and aerosol art in as well as collaborating on large mural.

Jody Boyer is an Omaha-based artist and UNO Lecturer as well as a mentor for the Kent Bellows Studio’s Contemporary Arts Program.

Cassandra Butt is in 12th grade at Central High School in Omaha. Cassandra creates mixed media artwork that incorporates text, painted images, and intelligently placed drips. Previously enrolled in Spring 2009 in the Gallery Internship Program, in Summer 2009 in Special Projects and in the Fall 2009 Artist-in-Residence Program.

Abby Chambers is in 12th grade at Duchesne Academy in Omaha. Abby makes intelligent, conceptual artwork with social and political messages. Previously enrolled in the Summer 2009 Community Mural Program and the Fall 2009 Artist-in-Residence Program.

Jessica Colabella is in 11th grade at Duchesne Academy in Omaha. Jessica makes figurative work that integrates textural and abstract mark making.

Nicole Crawford (co-curator) is an Omaha-based curator and performance artist as well as a mentor for The Kent Bellows Studio’s Gallery Internship Program.

Noah Diaz (co-curator) is in 11th grade at St.Alberts High School in Council Bluffs. Noah passion lies in theater arts and narrative work. He is currently exploring the medium of performance art.

Taye Edwards (co-curator) is in 12th grade at Benson High School in Omaha. Tae desires a career in the arts and has filled sketchbooks with his own drawings inspired by anime and graffiti style artwork. Previously enrolled in Spring 2009 in the Artist-in-Residence Program, in the Summer and Fall 2009 Artist-in-Residence Program.

Ariel Elliott is in 12th grade at Westside High School in Omaha. Ariel makes surreal and haunting images using mixed media and paint. Previously enrolled in Spring and Summer 2009 Artist in Residence Program and the Fall 2009 Gallery Internship Program.

Wanda Ewing is an Omaha-based artist and U.N.O. Lecturer as well as a mentor for the Kent Bellows Studio’s Artist-in-Residence Program.

Michael Fletcher is in 12th grade at Benson High School in Omaha. Michael is incredibly passionate about art in general, and loves creating carefully rendered anime characters. Michael was previously enrolled in the Fall 2009 Studio Thesis Program.

Emma Headley is a freshman at UNO in Omaha. Emma is in our pre-professional program internship with Joey Lynch. She is assisting Lynch in this internship-style program as he works to open Tugboat Presents: Push Gallery.

Ambur Hearn (co-curator) is in 11th grade at Central High School in Omaha. Ambur loves sketching with pencil and challenging herself to draw new objects and textures. Previously enrolled in the Summer and Fall 2009 Studio Thesis Program.

Nicole Henderson is in 11th grade at Bellevue East High School in Omaha. Nicole combines screen printing with traditional painting, and uses common icons and symbols to communicate meaning.

Anita Hodge is in 11th grade at Central High School in Omaha. Anita makes detailed surreal and anime-style pieces that show her vast imagination. Previously enrolled in the Adv. Studio Thesis Program in Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 and Studio Thesis Program in Fall 2009.

Bill Hoover is an Omaha-based painter and musician as well as a mentor for The Kent Bellows Studio’s Artist-in-Residence Program.

Madeline Hug is in 12th grade at Central High School in Omaha. Maddy takes sophisticated digital and traditional photographs and also makes interesting mixed media pieces. Madeline was previously enrolled in the Fall 2009 Artist-in-Residence Program.

Rachele Johnson (co-curator) is in 11th grade at Thomas Jefferson High School in Council Bluffs. Rachele makes unique abstract paintings with bold colors and shapes as well as graffiti inspired compositions. Previously enrolled in Spring 2009 Gallery Internship Program , the Summer 2009 Community Mural Program and the Fall 2009 Artist-in-Residence Program.

Matt Jones is an Omaha-based painter as well as a mentor for The Kent Bellows Studio’s Artist-in-Residence Program.
Rachael Kreski is in 11th grade at Marian High School. Rachael uses both painting and printmaking to explore floral patterns and culturally charged imagery.

Taylor Long is in 12th grade at North High School in Omaha. Taylor’s love of art in all its forms is immediately apparent, making him an energetic artistic force. Previously enrolled in Fall 2008 in The Gallery Internship Program, in Spring 2009 in the Adv. GIP, the Summer 2009 Artist-in-Residence Program, and the Fall 2009 Gallery Internship Program.

Joey Lynch is an Omaha-based Artist and curator as well as a mentor for The Kent Bellows Studio’s Artist-in-Residence Program.

Anthony Marx is in 10th grade at Creighton Prep High School in Omaha. Anthony is musically trained and works very expressively in his visual arts with thick paint and wild mark making.

Emma Mulhall is in 12th grade at Duchesne Academy in Omaha. Emma combines elements of anime and fantasy art that function as character studies of real life friends.

Mariah-Rose Marie McClaren is in 9th grade at Millard North High School. Mariah-Rose makes fantasy art with anthropomorphic content. She is dabbling in new mediums while exploring the connections between animals and people.

Kaitlan McDermott is in 12th grade at Skutt Catholic High School in Omaha. Kaitlan makes spontaneous expressive painting and has started a photography club at her school. Previously enrolled in the Summer 2009 Gallery Internship Program and Fall 2009 Artist-in-Residence Program.

Evan Pappan is in 10th grade at Blackburn High School. Evan is primarily a writer of fiction and is in process of translating his stories into visual art. Using graphite, Evan creates character studies and scenes from his writings.

Erin Robins is in 10th grade at Mercy High School. Erin combines her interest in athleticism and sports with gouache painting to investigate team spirit.

Hannah Remer is in 11th grade at Millard North High School. Hannah creates high detail figurative work that often has a narrative component. She is exploring contemporary art concepts and working collaboratively as well.

Greer Schulte is a graduate of Marian High School. She creates whimsical artwork in a large variety of mediums from fashion to sculpture. She is in the pre-professional program with Weston Thomson and working on education and studio management.

Julie Shadlow is in 12th grade at Millard North High School in Omaha. Julie works in aerosol paint and creates detailed figurative stencils.

Hayley Solarana is in 11th grade at Westside High School. Hayley makes paintings that explore the idea of body image or that investigate personal connections with friends and family.

Shira Sterling is in 10th grade at Westside High School in Omaha. Shira uses high contrast drawing and painting to create poetic imagery. Previously enrolled in Fall 2008 in The Studio Thesis Program, and in the Spring 2009 Studio Thesis Program and Fall 2009 Artist-in-Residence Program.

Weston Thomson is an Omaha-based artist and the Education Manager and mentor for The Kent Bellows Studio’s Studio Thesis Program.

Steve Walsh is an Omaha-based graffiti artist and mentor for The Kent Bellows Studio’s Urban Arts Program.

Maggie Weber (co-curator) is in 12th grade at Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs. Maggie is a warm, wise, conceptual thinker who makes interesting surrealist paintings. Previously enrolled in theSummer 2009 Community Mural Program and Fall 2009 Artist-in-Residence Program.

Meredith Whye is in 11th grade at Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs. Meredith is a committed print-maker who makes colorful graphic screen prints. Previously enrolled in the Summer and Fall 2009 Artist-in-Residence Program.
John Williams is an 11th grader at Westside High School in Omaha. John works primarily with graffiti style imagery in aerosol paint. He is exploring his own style and working collaboratively.

Lauren Wilson is in 11th grade at Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs. Lauren is up-beat, high-energy, and interested in exploring beyond her current surrealist pieces. Previously enrolled in the Summer and Fall 2009 Artist-in-Residence Program.

Hugo Zamorano is in 12th grade at Bryan High School in Omaha. Hugo makes art pieces that combine graffiti style with gestural brush strokes and realistically rendered elements. Previously enrolled in Fall 2008 in The Adv. Studio Thesis Program, and in the Spring and Fall 2009 in Artist-in-Residence Program.
