Building A Legacy: 25 Years of Exceptional Talent

Gallery 1 at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts & The Lied Art Gallery at Creighton University
Since our founding twenty-five years ago, we have been supporting the exceptional talent of artists from all over the world. Close to 700 artists have come to Omaha, NE to experiment, innovate and create. Building a Legacy showcases the most phenomenal works created by our Artists-in-Residence, and from November 10, 2006 – January 20, 2007, we are proud to present some of the most recent, cutting-edge additions to this growing legacy. Whether Kyoko Tokumaru’s finely-crafted porcelain sculptures, John Fraser’s delicate collages, Hope Tucker’s video obituaries, or Gerit Grimm’s playful ceramics, the works on display indicate the exciting and eclectic blend of creativity that occurs behind our studio doors each and every day.

And as a special homage to the work created at the Bemis Center over the past quarter of a century, Creighton University is hosting a special Building a Legacy exhibition at the Lied Art Gallery. Building A Legacy 1985 – 2007, on view January 6 – February 28, 2007, provides a more historical survey of past Artists-in-Residency. Works on view include two sculptures created at the Bemis Center by Littleton Alston, one of our earliest residents, who today is an associate professor in Creighton’s Visual Arts Department. Additional artists include painter Terry Rosenberg, whose renderings of dancers in real time have won world-wide acclaim, Bushwick Farms, whose traveling variety show and performance art captures imaginations around the country, and Jun Kaneko, one of contemporary ceramics most famous sculptors. Over thirty artists pass through the Bemis Center’s studios every year, and as part of their residency, they leave a piece of work behind as their artistic legacy to the Center. For this reason, the Bemis Center has a wealth of contemporary art to share with our community, and Creighton University’s Lied Gallery is making it possible for us to show even more of the art stored in our vaults.

Whether you take in Building a Legacy at the Bemis Center or at Creighton University, you will be taking part in the two-and-a-half decade history of contemporary art making at its finest.
