Chicago-based artist and cultural planner Theaster Gates, the Rebuild Foundation and the Bemis Center have begun renovations on a new cultural space for North Omaha. The restored Carver Bank Building at 2416 Lake St. will serve as an artist residency and community center, with the goal of revitalizing the surrounding urban and social fabric of North Omaha.
Gates’ has approached the project with the hybrid perspective of an urban planner, artist, and developer, expanding the definition of sculpture to include entire buildings, neighborhoods and communities. The project recently received a prestigious Our Town grant from the NEA and was profiled in The Reader last month. More details, along with a formal call for artists, will be announced soon. More »
