bemisUNDERGROUND BROUGHT THE BENJAMINS: WEEKEND FUNDRAISER SMASH SUCCESS
Posted on 05/06/2007
The bemisUNDERGROUND’s Weekend Fundraiser inspired artists, pleased crowds and brought the Benjamins out in major support of the Bemis Center’s curatorial training program. Both artist participation and community response exceeded expectations, demonstrating the high level of backing for the innovative, artist-driven program. Priced at $100 each, over 2/3 of the 100+ artworks sold over the three-day event, with all three works donated by Dave Swensen, whose solo exhibition Separation, Depression, Religion and Control opens in the bemisUNDERGROUND on August 24, selling on the first day – a sneak peek for what’s in store for his show!
All in all, more than 300 art lovers came out for the Art Sale and Dance Party co-presented with Tugboat Presents on Saturday night. Several DJs took their turns spinning throughout the evening, while “Red,” the live art piece by Doug Hayko whose East of 72nd debuts October 12 in the UNDERGROUND, was a huge hit with fundraiser partiers, who threw paint on a live model lying on a canvas. And people snapped up raffle tickets like crazy for prizes that included a two-night stay at the Hyatt Place Hotel and several hours of tattooing and piercing at Big Brain Tattoo.
*Pick-up for those who purchased art is this week, Monday - Thursday from 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. in the bemisUNDERGROUND.
